Post 1: “Reaction piece to the expert lecture”

JOHN POLKINGHORNE

John Polkinghorne worked for many years as a physicist. He soon resigned from the study of science to focus more on the divine and become a Reverend. Polkinghorne believed in the natural theology which he states is to find evidence of divinity. It is the endeavor to find evidence of an intelligent designer without option to a so it is said supernatural revelation. Polkinghorne states that science tells us how the world works but does not tell us everything about the world. For these missing gaps we must focus on religion. Religion shows us that the world is not mechanical.

Polkinghorne states that both religion and science has a tremendous impact on the actions of his life, they are both part of who he is and makes him who he is. For this reason Polkinghorne feels that there must be both the science and religion.

Biology has made a large discovery in DNA, other sciences also believe that they have explained many things regarding life and feel they can explain everything about it. Polkinghorne does not feel this is possible, he feels that we are more than our genes and that there is more to explain about the creation beyond the science stages of life. Polkinghorne states that God is a mysterious being and that it is better to call God the father rather than to call him a force. The universe is a part of God.

Post 2: “Substantial questions or elaborations or rebuttals to the required reading”

The Nietzsche Channel - Beyond Good and Evil

The nine sections of the Beyond Good and Evil talks about the progress of philosophy. It brings down the injustice of his time, looks for a new direction for philosophy. He feels that philosophers should be free and try different things, they should use religion, critical thinking to come to conclusions. He defines a genuine philosopher as original as opposed to following blind faith.

This reading was very complicated to read. Nietzsche makes me question the reality of the world, it focuses a lot on critical thinking. It makes the reader think about his thought process.

Nietzsche brings about great emotions in his view on religion. He believed that a person should have their own opinions. He does not disregard the position of the teacher or leader, but he also felt that the teacher must let go at a certain point. He feels that if this does not happen then the follower will then begin to follow on blind faith, rather it be religion, education, or any matter where one is being taught.

Post 3: “Discuss issues or ideas raised in the critical thinking films”

Philosophy in Less than Five Minutes: Films 1- 5 Beyond Belief Film Sessions 8 & 9

I found these short films very entertaining. One talked about Jorge Bore and his Zahir coin with the year 1929 and sketched with the letters NT and the number 2. The coin is meant to signify our free will. It tells us that we all have the power to choose our own destiny.

Our world is also made up littler things that jiggle according to Richard Feynman. I feel that he interprets the world as a composition of “little things”, technology, religion, education, physics, and together they make up the universe that we come to call the world. The film also shows a nuclear fusion in space with neutrons and electrons flying all around symbolizing some of the many things that the universe is made of.

I found the film Survival of the Sufficient by Darwin Redone to be my favorite because it was short and simple, yet in was loaded with critical information about life. The film talked about how as people we come in contact with people that continue to edit us. These people can be anyone, our neighbor, mother, wife, mailman, anyone that we come in contact with in our lives. The film restates that the Darwinian theory is not the survival of the fittest but the survival of the sufficient, which basically means that we may not be the strongest, but as long as we are sufficient enough to get by we can either team up with one that is stronger to help survive, or wing our way about where we are able to survive with ones own strength.

The film talks about how deception is natures method to make sure that we all have room to compete and how nature uses this competition to edit us. There is still a sense of survival of the fittest, but not as much as in the earlier days of human life. I feel that this relates more common to animals than human beings.
